In How the Mind Works, Pinker denies that music has any evolutionary significance. He likens it to strawberry cheesecake allowing us to experience nothing more than mental delight. A number of authors in Communicative Musicality (see Colwyn Trevarthen in this book page 57) challenge this view and underline the fact that Pinker has failed to recognise that music is much more than a set of notes - it has social and emotional functions. In fact, in much the same way as spoken language has!

Points for reflection

What practical applications do you think Pinker’s work might have?

Do you agree that music is just relaxation or do you see it as fundamental?
